Reader Supports Fair Property Taxes

Re “Overturn Assessment Ruling,” Feb. 17:

I strongly disagree with Mark S. Gaughan, chairman of the Orange County Taxpayers Assn., , and his stance on “recapturing” of our property taxes. The judge’s ruling appears to be correct inasmuch as Proposition 13 does not permit recapturing. This major increase came as a severe blow to most residential property owners because it came with no warning. I believe in paying fair property taxes, but not in gouging and not when it doesn’t conform with existing law. It is my hope that this ruling will not be challenged and that our overpayments will be rectified.
