About 2,500 Irish republicans gathered at a hotel in Dublin, the Irish capital, to commemorate members of the IRA and its political wing, Sinn Fein, killed in Northern Ireland’s 30-year conflict over British rule.

Attended by Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams and other senior party members, the controversial event angered relatives of those killed by the Irish Republican Army guerrilla group during its campaign against British control of the province.

Adams said that the event was about “closure” and that he hoped enough progress had been made toward peace.
