* EarthLink Inc., the third- largest U.S. Internet service provider, reported a first-quarter loss of $54.6million, or 41 cents a share, narrower than a year-earlier loss of $99.6 million, or 82 cents. Sales rose 13% to $333.4 million. Atlanta-based EarthLink wants customers who currently pay $21.95 a month to buy faster connections at higher prices. The company ended the quarter with 4.88 million customers, up 1.9% from a year earlier. EarthLink shares were down 46 cents at $9.53 on Nasdaq.

* Silicon Graphics Inc., whose computers created images for such movies as “Shrek,” had a fiscal third-quarter profit because of a $30-million tax refund as revenue fell short of expectations. Net income was $10.3 million, contrasted with a loss of $141.1 million last year. Revenue fell 38% to $313.6million. Shares of Silicon Graphics, based in Mountain View, Calif., were down 24 cents at $3.51 on the NYSE.
