Yugoslav General Pleads Not Guilty to War Crimes

Yugoslavia’s former army commander pleaded not guilty to charges of murdering ethnic Albanians and driving others from Kosovo, saying he was fighting terrorists in the Serbian province.
Gen. Dragoljub Ojdanic, 60, the highest-ranking Yugoslav army official to surrender to the U.N. war crimes tribunal in The Hague, could be sentenced to life in prison if found guilty.
Ojdanic was indicted in May 1999 for ordering attacks that led to the expulsion of about 800,000 civilians from Kosovo. Hundreds of others were killed, the indictment alleges.
