After a strong showing in the U.S. video game sales charts for early March, the fortunes of Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox changed dramatically and the console ended up barely registering in the top 20 for the full month, according to data released last week.

After registering six top-20 titles in the NPDFunworld report for March 3-16, the Xbox ended up with only two top-20 games for the full month, at Nos. 19 and 20.

Microsoft recently lowered its worldwide fiscal-year shipment forecast for the console by as much as 40%.

The top platform in the period was Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 2, with nine of the top 20, including four of the top 10.

The top-selling game in the period was Nintendo Co.’s “Super Mario Advance 2” for its Game Boy Advance.
