From Times Wire Reports

India will hold elections in the state of Jammu and Kashmir beginning next month, hopeful that a peaceful and fair process will ease violence in the disputed Himalayan region and deflate support for separatists.

Chief Election Commissioner J.M. Lyngdoh said polls for the 87 seats in Kashmir’s State Assembly would be held Sept. 16 and 24 and Oct. 1 and 8.

Meanwhile, at least five people were killed in gun battles between security forces and suspected separatists. Pakistan said cross-border fire by Indian and Pakistani troops inflicted more casualties. Both nations claim Kashmir.
