* Red Herring Communications Inc., which publishes a magazine that focuses on computer-related companies, reduced its staff by at least 30% as advertisers cut back on spending. The closely held San Francisco company cut its work force to fewer than 50 from 70. Ad revenue has fallen 73% this year through July.
* Electro Rent Corp., a Van Nuys-based provider of short-term rentals of personal computers and electronic test equipment, said net income fell 27% to $4.12 million, or 17 cents a share, in its fiscal fourth quarter. Sales fell 30% to $33.8 million. The firm also said it reduced its work force by 29% during the fiscal year to 425 employees.
* RealNetworks Inc., a maker of software for playing Internet audio and video files, said it would fire 11% of its staff, or 90 workers. The Seattle-based firm has about 800 employees.
* TiVo Inc., which makes software for personal digital video recorders, doubled its revenue forecast for its fiscal second quarter. The San Jose company said revenue for the quarter ended in July would be $23 million to $24 million, compared with the prior guidance of $10.5 million to $12 million.
* IVillage Inc., an operator of Internet sites for women, pared its second-quarter loss to $3.6 million, or 7 cents a share, from $18.5 million, or 56 cents, a year earlier. Sales rose 41% to $16.1 million.
