At least 48 people were killed--most of them women and children hacked to death--in fighting in northeastern Congo involving rebels, tribal militias and the Ugandan army, United Nations officials said.

U.N. troops said they counted the bodies of 37 civilians killed Thursday. Aid workers said fighting in Bunia had intensified.

A spokesman for the U.N. force said 11 Ugandan soldiers also were thought to have been killed in the clashes less than 30 miles from the Congolese border with Uganda.
