From Times Wire Reports

A Russian and an American took a four-hour spacewalk outside the orbiting international space station and replaced panels designed to protect the scientific outpost from space debris, Russian mission control said.

It was the first spacewalk for astronaut Peggy Whitson, who with veteran cosmonaut Valery Korzun replaced six of the shields.

Korzun, Whitson and Russian crew member Sergei Treshchyov have been living aboard the $95-billion station since June and are scheduled to remain in orbit until October.

The station has been manned since 2000, but construction continues.
