Rent Aid Available for Low-Income Residents

Share
From Times Staff Reports

The city’s Housing Authority is accepting applications from low-income residents interested in receiving Section 8 financial assistance with their rent.

The federal program provides landlords about 70% of the rent, up to $1,592 for a four-bedroom unit, for tenants who are selected. The city oversees more than 1,600 renters under the program.

Oxnard also owns and operates 780 public housing units--in two high-rise apartments for senior citizens and six other buildings, mostly in La Colonia--that provide a similar subsidy. Public housing tenants pay 30% of their eligible gross income for rent.

To qualify for both programs, the head of household must be at least 18 or legally emancipated and prepared to provide information about the family’s total gross income and Social Security numbers of all family members.

Applications will be accepted starting Sept. 3 and on the first Tuesday of the month thereafter at the Housing Authority office, 1470 Colonia Road, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Veterans, anyone permanently disabled on Supplementary Security Income, and seniors 62 and older may apply any time.
