A woman charged in connection with the deaths of two 10-year-old British girls appeared in court by video link Thursday to prevent any angry mob from gathering at the courthouse.

Maxine Carr, 25, is accused of lying to police investigating the disappearance and killing of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman. Her boyfriend, Ian Huntley, has been charged with murdering the girls, whose remains were found Aug. 17 in eastern England. He is in a high-security psychiatric hospital.

Carr, a former teaching assistant at the girls’ school, appeared in court last week in Peterborough. Several hundred people gathered outside the courthouse.

Sitting in Holloway Prison in north London on Thursday, Carr spoke softly to confirm her name via the video link beamed to the courthouse in Peterborough. She appeared distressed. She was remanded into custody until her next appearance Sept. 27.
