From Times Wire Reports

Thousands of soldiers and civilians who mobilized to fight flood waters in China headed home as water levels receded after dikes held back the rain-swollen Yangtze River.

Embankments protecting farms and cities in Anhui province remained intact even as the Yangtze rose 2 1/2 feet above the level considered unsafe for dikes, said an official in the province’s Water Resources Bureau.

Nearly 1,000 people have been reported killed since June by flooding, collapsed homes and landslides during China’s summer rainy season.
