Man With Gun Accused of Planning a Hijacking
A Swedish man was accused of planning to hijack a plane after a handgun was found in his carry-on luggage as he prepared to board a flight to Britain.
The 29-year-old Stockholm resident was part of a group headed to an Islamic conference in Birmingham, England, said police in Vaesteraas, 60 miles northwest of the capital, Stockholm.
“We believe he was going to hijack the plane,” police spokesman Ulf Palm said, adding that authorities were investigating possible terrorist links.
Authorities said the suspect, who wasn’t identified, had prior convictions for theft and assault, but they declined to speculate about a possible motive.
