Oil Firm Gives $1 Million to Yosemite Falls Project
Officials for ChevronTexaco made a $1-million donation Friday to restore the approach to Yosemite National Park’s most famous waterfall.
The 56-acre area at the base of Yosemite Falls is a mess of crowded parking lots and worn paths. The approach has been severely degraded by the more than one million people who visit annually, according to the Yosemite Fund, the group leading the two-year, $12.5-million renovation and restoration project.
Bob Hansen, president of the Yosemite Fund, said plans include taking out a parking lot, restoring stream banks and forest habitat, adding wheelchair access to viewing areas, and installing signs to highlight natural, Native American and pioneer history.
