From Times Wire Reports

French troops evacuated foreigners from a rebel-held city in western Ivory Coast as loyalist troops headed toward the area.

Eighty-three of 160 foreigners seeking to leave the city of Man were flown south to Abidjan, the commercial capital of the former French colony. The rest were to follow on a second plane.

The French said one of their soldiers was wounded and at least five rebels were killed in gun battles to secure the airport for the evacuation. It was not known whether any Americans were among the evacuees, half of whom were believed to be French.
