From Times Wire Reports

Stung by criticism over the Prestige tanker spill catastrophe, Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar took control of managing the crisis and prepared to travel to oil-stained northwest Spain.

Aznar, who has drawn rebukes for not visiting affected areas and seeming to distance himself from the disaster, presided over a crisis committee meeting.

His government has been criticized for playing down the spill’s magnitude, being slow to provide information and not giving enough aid to coastal residents.
