Discipline Hearing for Mormon Scholar Put Off
The Mormon Church has indefinitely postponed a disciplinary hearing for a scholar who has alleged racism in the Book of Mormon.
Matthew Latimer, president of the Lynnwood Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said it was “best not to proceed at this time” against Thomas Murphy.
Murphy, 35, chairman of the anthropology department at Edmonds Community College in Lynnwood, published an article in an anthology, “American Apocrypha,” that called the depiction of American Indians in the Book of Mormon racist.
