Leaders Vow to Support Terror War
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — U.S. Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld met with Horn of Africa leaders Tuesday and received pledges of support for fighting terrorism in the region, which was shaken by attacks in nearby Kenya last month for which Al Qaeda claimed responsibility.
Rumsfeld said his meetings with the leaders of Ethiopia and Eritrea aimed to build relations rather than seek specific military-related help in combating terrorist activity in the region, to which some Al Qaeda fighters had fled from Afghanistan.
“There is no question that the Horn of Africa and indeed many parts of the world are home to terrorist groups, including Al Qaeda,” Rumsfeld said at a media briefing after talks with Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. Meles vowed full backing for the war on terrorism.
