Superior Industries International Inc. promoted Steve Borick to president and chief operating officer, as he leads a capacity expansion at the world’s second-largest maker of automotive wheels.

Borick, 50, will take the president title from his father, Louis Borick, who remains chairman and chief executive, Superior said. The promotion is effective Jan. 1. The younger Borick has been executive vice president since January 2000 and a director since 1981.

Superior last month said it plans to expand manufacturing capacity about 25% in the next two years because automakers are using more aluminum wheels. The move follows expansions in the last few years at Arkansas and California plants as well as the building of a factory in Mexico.

Steve Borick has led the capacity expansion and helped direct the company’s move into production of aluminum suspension components, the Van Nuys-based company said.

Superior’s sales through three quarters of this year rose 23% from the year-earlier period to $585.9 million.

The company in October said it won aluminum-wheel contracts from General Motors Corp. for the Hummer H2 and Cadillac Escalade sport utility vehicles and the Buick LeSabre sedan.

Superior rose 85 cents to $40.95 Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange. Superior is second to Hayes Lemmerz International Inc. among wheel makers.
