Church Scandal May Spur Needed Reforms

Share

Re “Bishops to Warn of More Lawsuits,” Dec. 3:

The Roman Catholic Church seems to see itself as the victim rather than the perpetrator. The bishops of the Catholic Church were not doing their job: Time after time they exposed children to sexual predators. Now the bishops don’t like their authority being diminished by the law or the church’s wallet being punished.

Too bad. The church and bishops should be grateful if these are the only things that happen.

Without diminishing the pain of the victims, I think this sinful scandal will produce some great changes that are long overdue: The Catholic Church will become less patriarchal, and parishioners will become more involved in the good works of the church. We Catholics will also become more grateful and supportive of the priests who are weathering and will survive this scandal, most of whom are men of extremely good character and sacrifice.
