‘Wedding’ plans for Greece
Greece’s tourism agency said Thursday it will use the huge success of Oscar-hopeful “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” to boost the country’s flagging tourism industry.
Greece’s attractions will be advertised in a special edition of Modern Bride magazine, in which 7.2 million DVDs of the film will be included, EOT, the national tourist board, said in a statement.
“The idea is based on ... exploiting the results of the enormous box-office success of the film in the U.S.,” said EOT President Ioannis Patellis. Tourism makes up about 15% of the Greek gross domestic product and 10% of total employment.
The comedy stars Nia Vardalos as a 30-year-old woman of Greek heritage who marries a non-Greek -- to the annoyance of her quirky family.
