Government Denies Rape Is War Policy

Stung by criticism from the U.S., Myanmar’s military government issued a new denial of charges that its army uses rape as an instrument of war.
“The notion of rape as a systematic national policy is abhorrent” read a statement issued in Washington by a lobbyist for the military regime.
The State Department said Dec. 17 that its own investigation backed up allegations that Myanmar’s military was conducting a campaign of sexual violence against women and girls from the Shan ethnic minority.
