Gene Linked to Pancreas Defect in Infants Found

Researchers at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children reported in the January issue of Nature Genetics that they identified the gene that causes Shwachman-Diamond syndrome, a disorder occurring once in 50,000 births. Victims have a defect in the pancreas that causes digestion difficulties, inadequate production of some white blood cells, skeletal abnormalities and short stature.
The team found two defective forms of a gene on chromosome 7 that cause the disease.
