From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Researchers at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children reported in the January issue of Nature Genetics that they identified the gene that causes Shwachman-Diamond syndrome, a disorder occurring once in 50,000 births. Victims have a defect in the pancreas that causes digestion difficulties, inadequate production of some white blood cells, skeletal abnormalities and short stature.

The team found two defective forms of a gene on chromosome 7 that cause the disease.
