Coveting the Nabors house

Times Staff Writer

Jim Nabors slept here. The actor-singer, who gained fame as goober Gomer Pyle in his own comedy series (1964-72), once called this classic Bel-Air estate home.

Almost every room in the Mediterranean mansion opens to a city-to-ocean view, and yet the house and its grounds are private. The landscaping, with antique brick pathways and sandstone retaining walls, helps to ensure seclusion. There is a courtyard with a fountain and a hidden lily pond with a wishing bridge.

The estate was built in 1938 for an owner of the Portland Cement Co.

About this house: The view is the thing, from downtown L.A. to the Pacific. The more than 1.5 acres of grounds slope gently to the south, opening the house to sunlight from dawn to dusk. There is a sunroom in the master bedroom to take advantage of the light. The suite also has a study-library with a wet bar, walk-in wardrobes and an onyx bathroom and sauna, which open to a balcony. Downstairs, there is a terrace between the living and dining rooms.
