From Wire Reports

A student who collapsed and died while trying out for the Northern Illinois football team had an enlarged heart, the coroner of DeKalb County, Ill., said Saturday.

Results of the autopsy on Jawan Jackson, 19, were inconclusive, but he “had a very enlarged heart for his size” and it appears he died of natural causes, coroner Dennis Miller said.

Miller said microscopic studies of Jackson’s heart muscle will be conducted, and could take up to two weeks.

He said there was no obvious cause of death.

Jackson, of the Chicago suburb of Robbins, died Friday after collapsing during conditioning drills.

Athletic trainers tried to resuscitate him before calling paramedics, the school said.

Northern Illinois officials said Jackson submitted a signed certificate indicating he had undergone a physical exam and was able to participate in tryouts.

Oakland Raider defensive tackle Darrell Russell remained in jail on $1.2-million bail, a day after he was arrested with two men on suspicion of drugging and sexually assaulting a 27-year-old woman.

Russell will face seven counts of rape, Alameda Police Lt. Jim Brock said.

Russell is scheduled to appear in court Monday.

Russell, 25, is serving a one-year NFL suspension after testing positive for the drug Ecstasy, and the suspension’s terms block the Raiders from direct contact with him, said Bruce Allen, Raider senior assistant.

The office of Leigh Steinberg, Russell’s agent, told Associated Press that Steinberg had no comment.

Dozens of NFL players were defrauded of more than $40 million by their financial advisors since 1999, the players’ association estimates.

In a story appearing on newsstands Monday, U.S. News & World Report publishes its investigation of more than 20 investment deals involving current and former NFL players.

Tampa Bay defensive lineman Simeon Rice and Buffalo cornerback Antoine Winfield are among those who told the magazine details of how they were allegedly defrauded.

“Those are only the ones we know about,” union chief Gene Upshaw said Saturday.
