DIET / The Gospel of Good Eating

Would the Prince of Peace enjoy curly fries? How about toaster pastries or spray-on cheese?

The Gospels offer little guidance. But a family physician, Dr. Don Colbert, makes some educated guesses in his new book, “What Would Jesus Eat? The Ultimate Program for Eating Well, Feeling Great and Living Longer.” Combining careful reading of the Bible with 14 years of experience treating patients (along with some common sense), Colbert lays out the fundamentals of Jesus’ diet: whole-grain bread, fish, kosher meat, fruits and vegetables and lots of water. The book also has a word to say about Communion wine: Drink in moderation. “Wine can help lower your chances of cardiovascular disease and ischemic stroke as well as aid digestion,” the author asserts. At the same time, drinking alcohol “is only mentioned in Scriptures where Christians are not encouraged to consume excessively.”

As for those salty curly fries, the book says, “Jesus used coriander, hyssop, mint and parsley to season his food, not salt.”
