3 Die in Avalanche; Scores Trapped in Tunnel
From Times Wire Reports
An avalanche buried 20 to 40 cars in snow near the world’s highest tunnel, a U.N. spokesman said. At least three people suffocated, he said.
The dead were among an estimated 100 people trapped in the Salang Tunnel, about 80 miles north of the Afghan capital, Kabul, said the spokesman, Yusuf Hassan.
Rescue workers, including U.S. soldiers, were trying to reach people in the cars still buried.
