Storms Pound Eastern Town; 46 Feared Dead
At least 46 people were feared dead after the worst storms in a decade lashed eastern Congo, three weeks after a volcanic eruption razed much of the city of Goma, aid workers said.
“We have so far found 15 bodies; 31 more are missing, they must be under the rocks,” said Constantin Magala-Baha, president of the Congolese Red Cross branch in the town of Uvira.
Rescuers in Uvira, about 125 miles south of Goma, said the rain and flash floods Wednesday had left more than 600 people homeless.
Residents decried the double curse of an eruption and then a tempest.
