Tall Tales Emerging From Civil War Sub
Scientists studying the remains of the crew of a Civil War-era submarine said they were getting a better picture of the men who died when the world’s first successful attack sub sank--and one surprise was how tall they were.
The Confederate sub H.L. Hunley disappeared Feb. 17, 1864, shortly after sinking the Union ship Housatonic in Charleston Harbor. In 1995, a dive team found it four miles off Sullivan’s Island.
The sub was raised in 2000; scientists have been studying the remains of the eight crew members since last year.
The captain of the 43-foot craft, Lt. George Dixon, was 6 feet tall, and the other crew also were much taller than scientists expected.
