Beaten Prisoners
Re “U.S. Forces Beat Afghans After Deadly Assault, Ex-Prisoners Say,” Feb. 11: American forces held prisoners for 16 days and beat and kicked them until they realized that they were not Taliban or Al Qaeda fighters. (I suppose the violence would have been justified if they were terrorists?) So, the Americans apologize, and that’s that. Are the U.S. soldiers involved in these cruel beatings going to be held accountable and disciplined? Probably not. This will be dismissed with a big “Oops!” and forgotten.
If the U.S. military is not watched more closely, it will continue to show the world that we are not on a peaceful mission but one of revenge, power and arrogance.
