Rebels Fire Mortar at Garrison; 10 Killed
From Times Wire Reports
Leftist rebels launched a homemade mortar shell at an army garrison in southern Colombia, killing 10 soldiers and wounding more than 30, military officials said.
The mortar round was fired before dawn from a pickup truck 600 yards from the garrison in the town of Pitalito, 235 miles southwest of Bogota, Gen. Gilberto Rocha said.
It started a fire that detonated several hand grenades inside.
Officials blamed the attack on the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.
