Liberians rushed to banks in Monrovia, the capital, to withdraw their savings as police jailed more suspected rebel agents under a state of emergency, officials said.

The city has been on edge since rebels struck just outside the capital Thursday. Security forces have since driven the rebels back.

The editor of the Analyst newspaper, Stanley Seakor, was arrested for writing articles deemed “distasteful,” according to the country’s Press Union.
