Infirmity Claims One of Lincoln’s Favorite Trees

Workers using chain saws cut down the historic copper beech in Northwest Washington that provided shade and comfort to the nation’s 16th president.
The 40-foot-tall tree, where President Lincoln liked to sit when he was staying at the summer White House at what is now known as the U.S. Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Home, had succumbed to old age after being weakened by a fungus infection and recent droughts.
A 15-foot stump, 56 inches in diameter, remained.
