The first rain in what normally is Southern California’s wettest month is expected on Sunday.

“As winter storms go, it’s a light one, but after how dry it’s been, at least there should be a little precipitation,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Bruce Rockwell.

Rockwell said the Pacific storm should move into the Los Angeles area before dawn Sunday, with about a quarter of an inch of rain in the valleys and a little more than that in the foothills before skies start clearing Sunday night.

Several inches of snow are expected in mountains above 6,000 feet.

Skies should be partly cloudy on the Presidents Day holiday, with more rain and snow possible toward the end of next week.

Temperatures throughout the weekend should be a little cooler than normal, with valley and downtown highs near 60, following overnight lows mostly in the 40s and 50s.

Total rainfall since July 1 is 3.66 inches, compared with a normal total for the same period of 8.95 inches.
