Ethnic Clashes Leave as Many as 200 Dead
Up to 200 people have been killed in ethnic clashes in northeastern Congo in the last two days, tribal sources said.
A spokesman for the Hema community in Bukavu said that an attack Friday by Lendu militiamen on the Hema village of Kparnganza, about 15 miles north of the town of Bunia, had left 200 people dead.
“It’s the same business that has been going on for the past three years,” Jean-Baptiste Dhetchuvi said. Fighting between the Lendu and Hema communities in Congo has killed thousands of people in recent years in a conflict over land and natural resources.
