January Storm Prompts 3 States to Ask for Relief

From Times Wire Reports

Governors in three Midwestern states lashed by a late January storm have asked the federal government for disaster aid to pay for nearly $200 million in storm-related damage and costs.

The federal government typically pays 75% of public disaster aid, with state and local governments picking up the rest. Kansas and Oklahoma are asking for full relief. Missouri is seeking 90%.

Without full federal aid, “the economic impact to the state will be extremely devastating,” Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating said in a letter to President Bush.
