USC Squeaks Past Arizona

Aisha Hollans scored 19 points as USC used late-game free throws to defeat Arizona, 71-64, Saturday, at Tucson.

Despite leading the entire game, USC, 14-11 overall and 10-6 in the Pacific 10 Conference, found itself in trouble in the final minutes when Arizona used three consecutive three-point baskets to cut the Trojan lead to 63-59 with 1:36 remaining.

After Jessica Cheeks made a two free throws, Arizona’s Dee-Dee Wheeler made a three-pointer to cut USC’s lead to 65-62 with 1:05 remaining.

However, a pair of free throws from Cheeks and Rachel Woodward sealed the win for the Trojans, who led at halftime, 44-23.

Wheeler led Arizona (13-13, 9-8) with a game-high 21 points.

Aimee Gryzb (11 points) was the only other Arizona player to score in double-figures.

Woodward added 17 points and seven rebounds for USC in the win.

Arizona State 64, UCLA 42--Amanda Levens had 13 points to lead Arizona State in a Pac-10 game at Tempe, Ariz.

The Sun Devils (21-7, 12-5) took a 15-point lead into the second half after holding the Bruins (7-18, 3-13) to only 18 points.

UCLA fought back to within 10 points, 38-28, with 12:47 to go after Gennifer Arranaga made back-to-back jumpers.

UCLA was unable to get any closer, as Arizona State opened the game back up to take a 22-point lead, 55-33, with 2:26 after Kylan Loney made a jumper from an assist by Levens.

Levens finished with a season-high nine assists. The Sun Devils capitalized 23 UCLA turnovers into 11 points.

Jalina Bradley was the top scorer for UCLA with eight points, while Shalada Allen had a game-high 10 rebounds.

No. 2 Stanford 76, Washington State 50--Lindsey Yamasaki scored 18 points, and Azella Perryman added 13 points and 16 rebounds at Stanford as the Cardinal got its 18th consecutive victory.

The Cardinal (26-1, 16-0 in the Pac-10) improved to 34-0 against the Cougars.

Brittany Hawks led Washington State (2-24, 0-16) with 16 points and 10 rebounds, but the Cougars lost their school-record 21st straight game.

No. 3 Tennessee 75, No. 6 Vanderbilt 68--Kara Lawson scored 26 points, 19 in the second half as Tennessee (22-3, 10-2) dealt Vanderbilt its 17th straight loss in a Southeastern Conference game at Knoxville, Tenn.

Chantelle Anderson led Vanderbilt (22-6, 8-4) with 20 points.

No. 4 Oklahoma 81, Nebraska 47--Jamie Talbert and Caton Hill each had 19 points and eight rebounds, and Oklahoma (22-2, 12-1) clinched at least a tie for its third straight Big 12 title at Norman, Okla. Alexa Johnson scored 14 points for Nebraska (14-12, 4-9).

No. 8 Louisiana Tech 82, Southern Methodist 36--Cheryl Ford had 16 points and 15 rebounds to lead Louisiana Tech (19-3, 14-0) in a Western Athletic Conference game at Ruston, La.

Shanta Ramdhanny scored nine points for SMU (9-15, 4-10).

No. 11 Baylor 76, No. 18 Texas 69--Sheila Lambert scored 27 points and Danielle Crockrom added 22 as Baylor (21-4, 9-4) overcame 28 points by Heather Schreiber to defeat Texas (16-8, 7-6) in a Big 12 game at Waco, Texas.

No. 17 Colorado State 69, San Diego State 60--Jackie Campbell scored 15 points to lead Colorado State (20-5, 9-2) to a Mountain West win at San Diego. San Diego State (9-14, 1-9) lost its fifth straight.

No. 21 Boston College 64, Pittsburgh 37--Amber Jacobs scored 17 points to lead Boston College (19-5, 10-3) in a Big East game at Boston.

Amy Kunich paced the Panthers (7-17, 2-11) with 10 points.

No. 23 Notre Dame 57, Rutgers 52--Alicia Ratay scored 25 points at Piscataway, N.J., as Notre Dame (17-7, 11-2 Big East) extended its win streak to seven games. Mauri Horton led Rutgers (7-17, 4-9) with 25 points.
