Catholics Told Latin’s Wane Imperils Church

A leading church Latinist warned this week that with the study of Latin dying out, Roman Catholics are in danger of losing their identity.

“Today there are priests who don’t even know how to read the inscriptions on tombs in their churches,” the Rev. Biagio Amata said.

Amata, dean of the Pontificium Institutum Altioris Latinitatis, a Salesian institution, known in English as the Pontifical Institute of Higher Latin Studies, spoke at a symposium marking the 40th anniversary of Veterum Sapientia, the apostolic constitution reaffirming the importance of Latin in seminarians’ curricula.
