President Hosni Mubarak accepted the resignations of the transportation minister and railway chief as authorities prepared for a mass grave burial of unidentified, charred bodies from Egypt’s deadliest railway disaster.

Mubarak tried to soothe widespread anger, promising to punish anyone found negligent in the inferno that killed 363 people.

Prime Minister Atef Abeid appointed Abdel Qader Metwali to replace Ahmed Sherif, who resigned as Egyptian Railway Authority chief, the Middle East News Agency reported. Metwali was the authority’s deputy for technical affairs. No replacement has been named yet to replace Ibrahim Demeri as transportation minister.
