Community Synergy in South Whittier

Share

“Good turns” can be performed by individuals or teams. Your inspiring Feb. 17 story about Gloria Garcia appropriately gave recognition to this fine volunteer at the Community Resource Center in South Whittier. Another inspiring story is the collective “good turn” that a team of players performed for that community. The L.A. County Community Development Commission, which owns and operates the CRC, has spent over eight years working in partnership with the South Whittier community and Supervisors Gloria Molina and Don Knabe to revitalize that low- and moderate-income area. These county entities and various for-profit and nonprofit developers have jointly funded five projects with a total investment of more than $30 million within a two-mile radius. The five developments constructed are the CRC, Sunshine Terrace Apartments (affordable rental housing), Sundance Vistas (public rental housing), TELACU Villa Hermosa (a housing center for low-income seniors) and Carmenita Walk (affordable housing).

The team effort has created a powerful “community synergy.” Anyone seeking services or wanting to volunteer may contact the Community Resource Center at (562) 946-2425.
