A Channel Islands High School senior was among 50 students in Southern California awarded the African-American Future Achievers scholarship from Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Nicole Jenkins of Oxnard will receive $1,000 toward her college tuition. Although she has not yet decided on a school, the 17-year-old plans to study biological sciences and become a doctor.

She is active in her school’s Black Student Union, plays jazz on her alto sax and has immersed herself in Black folklore.
