Microsoft Corp. Chief Technology Officer Craig Mundie said making consumer and corporate data completely secure as they pass over computer networks will take a decade or more and will require stepped-up efforts from software writers.

Though some of the largest software maker’s products have been the victim of hacker attacks in the last few years, the entire industry must devote more programmers to combat computer viruses and other security vulnerabilities, Mundie said in a speech at a security conference in San Jose last week.

“There’s nothing that we or anybody else can do that fires a silver bullet at this problem and it all gets better overnight, or even in a small number of years,” he said.
