The U.S. Forest Service on Monday finalized a $17.6-million purchase of a 920-acre slice of Big Sur coast that had been slated for development.

The sweeping Bixby Ocean Ranch property, once owned by Allen Funt of “Candid Camera” fame, is one of the most photographed spots along Big Sur.

It had been slated for estate homes before the nonprofit Trust for Public Land put together a deal to buy it.

An additional 306 acres on the ranch is to be acquired later this year by the land trust, which is continuing to pursue a private fund-raising effort.
