Germans Say Detainee Not Tied to Al Qaeda
A man who was arrested based on a tip that he belonged to Al Qaeda has no link to Osama bin Laden’s terrorist network, German investigators said Sunday.
Heinz Jurgen Vitz, a prosecutor for the city of Moenchengladbach, said that the man remains in custody on a charge of carrying false papers but that there is no evidence he has any ties to Bin Laden’s network.
The man was arrested Saturday at a hotel in the city 15 miles west of Duesseldorf. Police did not release his name, but lead investigator Georg Schubert said the man was a 27-year-old Lebanese national who has been living in the area since 1992.
