Mohammed bin Jubeir, 76; Head of Saudi Arabian Parliament
Sheik Mohammed bin Ibrahim bin Jubeir, 76, the head of the Shura Council--Saudi Arabia’s equivalent of a parliament--died Thursday, the Royal Court announced. Bin Jubeir served as a judge in Mecca, home to one of Islam’s holiest shrines, and as minister of justice. He also headed a department for citizens to file complaints against the government.
The pinnacle of his career was being named head of the Shura Council when it was established in 1992. The council is a wholly appointed body of 120 members that advises the king.
In an interview with The Times earlier this month, Bin Jubeir suggested that Saudi Arabia had been unfairly criticized after the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
He suggested that the United States has done little to offer substantive proof that any of the hijackers involved in the attacks were actually from Saudi Arabia.
