Light Snow Dusts Southland Foothills

Light snow dusted the foothills above Glendora, San Dimas, Moreno Valley and Redlands on Tuesday evening as an Arctic storm system left a frosty calling card before departing for Arizona.

“There even were a few flurries down here in town, but as soon as it hit the ground, it melted,” said Lt. Tim Dech of the Glendora Police Department.

“It was just a teeny, tiny little bit,” said a police dispatcher in Redlands. “But it was snow.”

The storm brought a lot less rain and snow than forecast. But the National Weather Service was right about the cool temperatures, with overnight readings below or near freezing at the coldest locations in Orange County and the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys.

Readings before dawn Tuesday included 27 degrees in Yorba Linda, 30 in Chatsworth, 32 in Northridge, 33 in Glendale and 34 in Pasadena, and forecasters said it could be even colder this morning.

The low Tuesday morning at Big Bear Lake was 14 degrees, and the high was 23 degrees, the coldest maximum for a Jan. 29 ever recorded there.

Clear skies and cool temperatures are forecast for the rest of the week.
