Chile’s Supreme Court ruled that Augusto Pinochet can’t be put on trial because of his mental problems, a decision that will probably end the 86-year-old former dictator’s legal troubles.

The court cited the mental health problems of Pinochet, who suffers from dementia, as the reason for its decision. He also suffers from diabetes and arthritis, has a pacemaker and has had at least three mild strokes since 1998.

The ex-ruler was accused of covering up killings and abductions by a military death squad after seizing power in a bloody coup in 1973.
