General Election Set for Sept. 15
Macedonia set Sept. 15 as the date for a general election politicians hope will crown the peace process begun after last year’s ethnic conflict.
Parliamentary Speaker Stojan Andov, announcing the date, said he hoped the election would be fair and democratic and “conclude the crisis and open a new era.”
The National Assembly last month cleared the way for the election by passing a package of laws promised in a Western-brokered peace accord granting more civil rights to the large ethnic Albanian minority.
Western organizations in Macedonia fear violence could flare during the election and are planning to monitor it closely.
