From Times Wire Reports

Opponents of a plan to bury nuclear waste in Nevada rallied in Las Vegas and called on the U.S. Senate to reject the Yucca Mountain proposal during a vote that could come this week.

“This is a huge public health issue for the entire country,” said Deborah Huber, one of about 175 protesters. “They talk about homeland security, but transporting this across the country is a terrorists’ dream come true.”

The government has spent $7 billion over two decades studying Yucca Mountain, 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas, as the preferred site to bury 77,000 tons of waste accumulating at nuclear power reactors in 31 states.

A final decision on whether the project will go forward or be scrapped rests with Congress.
