Ex-Deputy Leader Loses Corruption Case Appeal

Former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim lost his appeal in Malaysia’s highest court today against his conviction and prison term for corruption.
Anwar, who was sacked and jailed after challenging Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad in 1998, is serving a six-year sentence on the corruption conviction, handed down in April 1999.
He is also serving a nine-year sentence for sodomy, which he is appealing separately.
The ruling was unanimous. The Federal Court decision means that Anwar has exhausted all legal avenues and now can only hope for a royal pardon.
